Spencer Phips (1685-1757) was born "Spencer Bennett" in Rowley, Mass., but was adopted at an early age by his uncle Gov. William Phips (1651-1695). He was educated at Harvard (1703) and settled in Cambridge, Mass., where he served as state representative in 1721, then town councillor, 1721-1732; he became the state's Lieutenant Governor, 1732-1757.
